Welcome to Div. 59
Division 59 held its first organizing meeting in August 1969 and received its charter from the California  Retired  Teachers  Assoc., CalRTA, in 1970. The first general meeting was held  on  January 5, 1970. When the membership climbed  over  900, we sponsored the Tri-Valley Division 85 and in 2000 we sponsored the Fremont, Union City, Newark Division 91.

Each year Division 59 raises money to award scholarships to students in the teacher credential program at California State University, East Bay. The Eduation Department identifies the deserving recipients and they receive their financial award at the June luncheon. We award mini-grants to the teachers in the Beginning Teacher Support and Assessment (BTSA) program for Castro Valley, Hayward, San Leandro, and San Lorenzo Unified School Districts.

Locally, we have events such as luncheon meetings, travel outings, committee meetings, and other opportunities for fellowship and fun. For more information about us and our events check our newsletter RECESS for more details.

Become a Member
Membership is not restricted to retired educators. If you are currently in education or just interested in our goals, you are welcome to attend  a luncheon meeting and become a  member!

Social Security Fairness

Since 1983 retired teachers and other public service employees in 15 states including California have been adversely effected by the "Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the "Government Pension Offset" (GPO) section in Social Secuity.  For more information and what we can do to eliminate these unfair provisions of social security visit the following links.
